THREE MONKEYS HAVE NEVER BEEN AT STEINTOR
Hanover's red-light district is as easy to find as in many other towns in Germany.
The strip, known here as Steintor, is just a seven minutes' walk from the main railway station. The name goes back to the 20th century when the gate 'Steintor' marked the entrance of the city. Today, the area encompasses five streets and a wide variety of cultures, religions and worldviews. Brothels, strip bars, casinos, restaurants, barber shops and offices stand cheek by jowl.
Yet "The Golden Age", when people were cuing to enter one of the clubs has come to an end. The shelves of the last porn video store is filled with DVDs sold for dumping prices and the municipality is trying to push the red-light-district out of its city center - leaving the neighbourhood with its musty corners to an uncertain future.
This series is an exploration of Steintor's spaces and its people - some live and work there, some just pass by.
